Precarious employment spreading in the current economy, as described by the author of the book, is now prevalent at Google: "Google parent Alphabet had more contractors than direct employees this year, for the first time ever". And now Google contractors are revolting:

In an open letter to CEO Sundar Pichai, members of Google's "shadow workforce" of temporary workers and contractors is demanding higher wages and equal benefits.

Why pepper spray must be universally recognized for self-defense

There are still many countries including a number of European states where pepper spray (and effectively any meaningful self-defense) is officially banned and where its possession can even be considered a criminal offence. The list of such countries includes: Belgium, Denmark, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Sweden, United Kingdom, New Zealand, Australia (except Western Australia) and Turkey.

At the same time it's allowed in the US, Canada, Czech Republic, Spain, Austria, Poland, Russia, Western Australia (prohibited in its other parts) and Japan where its possession is legal by most civilians.

I believe the attitude of the country to giving its citizens rights and means for self-defense - is one of the prominent true democracy markers. It basically demonstrates trust, care and sincerity (in admittance that state can't defend everyone everywhere and all time).

And by the way, pepper spray is one of the safest means of self-defense. “It’s natural. You could actually put it on your nachos and eat it. It’s a good way of deterring people without long-term harm,” said ex-Border Patrol deputy chief Ron Colburn, who served under President George W. Bush. It's included in the arsenal of police all over the world, and should be accessible by civilians as well since "you can't carry a cop with you, he is too heavy".

Pepper spray should also be universally allowed to be used by tourists for their safety. Of course, the law should also regulate its fair use, to discourage its use eg for pranks etc.

Harvard discriminates against students based on their sex - per the filed federal suit - Fraternities, sororities sue Harvard over rule against single-sex clubs. Colleges and universities mess things up pursuing elusive "social justice" and enjoying resulting rampant bureaucracy. How can they produce and disseminate real knowledge in such environments?

Anyways, the author of this book about manhood attributes decline in American masculinity to decline in all-male organizations, among other things. So, this legal suit is a positive thing in this regard.

China to become a factory for super-humans?

China officially started experimenting with human gene modifications where modified embryos allowed to grow into live humans (as opposed to modified embryos killed at early stages in the US in similar experiments). The purpose behind this may be not just fighting disease as declared, but also creation of super-humans or humans with specific DNA profiles best suitable e.g. for military and other applications:

Playing with humanity’s genetic code could open a Pandora’s box. Scientists will eventually be able to alter DNA not just to protect against disease but also to create genetically enhanced human beings.

It may remain illegal in the most developed countries to do the same. In such situation China may become a destination for those who want their kids to become superior at the genetic level and pay for that, similarly to the countries that allowed assisted suicide and attracted clients from the countries not allowing it.

It was reported that in this initial experiment in China not all genes were modified consistently for the expected effect to realize reliably, and it may take years to master the technique via trial and error on live humans, with totally unpredictable results.

Is artificial human enhancement - an inevitable path in the future human evolution? And would Musk's proposition in the form of human augmentation with AI that his startup Nueralink is working on - be a competitive futuristic approach?

The journalist questions Internet culture, but somehow ignores the social "culture" where so many women are involved casually in prostitution and related gigs, often as their "second job", from Internet trolls are threatening to report sex workers to the IRS:

Internet culture is honestly at its worst and these people are potentially ruining women’s (and a few men’s) lives by getting them into trouble with the law as a joke,” another said. “They are doing it solely because they think it’s funny to ‘cleanse the internet.’

The subject of this investigation is exactly what happened and why Bitcoin price rose so much last year, from the article The Bitcoin ‘pyramid scheme’ continues to collapse:

One report last week said the Trump administration is investigating whether people were propping up the price by purchasing bitcoin with other cyrpotcurrencies, which is like the mathematical equation “Confidence game squared.”
